Students Compete in Science Olympiad State Competition

On April 27th, 15 students at Warwick High School traveled to Penn State Altoona Campus to compete in 23 different events at the State Science Olympiad Competition. Students competed in the following categories: Life, Personal & Social Science, Earth & Space Science, Physical Science & Chemistry, Technology & Engineering, and Inquiry & Nature of Science.

Each student competes in a minimum of three events, each an hour in length. The events are based on knowledge, labs, and building events where students have to create something and bring it to the competition.

The team qualified for States based on their performance at the Regional Competition. Science Olympiads are led by advisors Mrs. Sarah Martens, Mrs. Krista Roe, Mrs. Lisa Hochreiter, and Mr. Lee Walters.

The team is comprised of the following students in grades 9-12:

Trey Bergman (9th)

Ian Boltz (9th)

Sarah Wohlforth (9th)

Ansh Dwivedi (11th)

Daniel Hartman (9th)

Auguste Johnson (9th)

Johnathan Kellogg (12th)

Crystal Kirui (11th)

Patryk Palmer (11th)

Nicholas Rossi (10th)

Eva Shiflet (9th)

Rivers Smoker (9th)

Rebekah Trovinger (12th)

Maggie Turner (12th)

Jacob Vance (12th)

Throughout the day-long competition, students were challenged in a wide array of STEM-based events. This process teaches students how to be flexible, well-rounded academically, and to have the ability to problem-solve. Students love being a part of these competitions and testing their abilities in fun and creative ways.

Johnny and Maggie received first place in the competition for their ‘Write It, Do It’ event. This event is run in pairs. One student (Maggie) sees a model and writes instructions on how to recreate it to give to the other student (Johnny). From there, student two (Johnny) receives the instructions and the parts of the model and must perfectly build the model as student one (Maggie) saw it. Johnny and Maggie did a fantastic job working together to earn the gold!

In addition to their first-place win, Nick and Patryk earned 12th in the Robot Tour, Ansh earned 13th in Air Trajectory, and Trey and Ian earned 14th in the Tower Building competition.

Congratulations to all these students! We are so proud to see your hard work pay off.
