Chancey Jean performs in the 2022 All-National Honor Ensembles Mixed Choir

On November 5th, Chancey Jean, a senior at Warwick High School, participated in the 2022 All-National Honor Ensembles Mixed Choir Concert.

The choir group was comprised of roughly 240 students from across the United States. The festival was held from November 3rd - November 6th with the Mixed Choir performing on November 5th at the Gaylord Convention Center.

Chancey was one of 30 students to qualify for a Bass II part in the ensemble. For a complete list of participating students, click here.

The group was conducted by Frances Fonza and accompanied by Lisa Powell.

The following pieces were performed:

A Mighty Fortress, Carl F. Mueller

Come Sweet Death, J. S. Bach

Wangol, Sten Kallman

Journey Home, Abbie Betinis

TaReKiTa, Reena Esmail

Can We Sing the Darkness to Light? Kyle Pederson

Way Over in Beulah Land, Stacy Gibbs

This year’s audition was held virtually. Students interested in being considered were asked to send in a video submission of themselves performing scales and their audition piece.

In preparation for the audition, Chancey began by drilling the notes and rhythms first. From there, he worked on tone quality, word stress, and breathing. Lastly, he worked through when to use his full voice vs. a falsetto voice. He was speechless when he received the phone call that he’d been selected.

During his time at Warwick, Chancey has been involved in Show Choir, Chamber Choir, Music Theory classes, and several musicals. He was initially inspired to be a part of Warwick’s music scene when he first moved to the area in 5th grade and saw the Warwick Show Choir perform.

After graduation, Chancey is hoping to attend Pointe Park where he’d like to major in Music Performance and/or Theatre and minor in Music Production.

Chancey encourages other students to push past their nerves when it comes to auditioning because having nerves means that you’re focused. If there’s one piece of advice he could share with others, it’d be to ‘Always try to find a way to improve.’

Congratulations to Chancey on this massive achievement!
