Lititz, PA – Four Diamonds Mini-THON® recognized Emma Leister, a senior at Warwick High School during the 2019 Mini-THON Leadership Summit on August 9 in Hershey, Pa., for achievement in 2019 Mini-THON®Rising Diamond Award. Awards are given to Mini-THON students who excel in areas including leadership, student body participation, fundraising and community service. Warwick High School joined more than 1,000 student leaders and advisors at the annual Leadership Summit to share best practices and ideas, celebrate successes and inspire each other to continue the fight to conquer childhood cancer.
Mini-THONs are modeled after the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, or THON, the world’s largest student-run philanthropy. Since 1993, Mini-THON has raised more than $43 million. The funds are used to drive the discovery of new and improved treatments for childhood cancer by supporting the work of more than 90 researchers at Penn State Children’s Hospital and Penn State College of Medicine. Four Diamonds also supports families by covering all medical expenses not paid for by insurance for every eligible child.
During the 2018-2019 school year, more than 90,000 student volunteers in 268 schools teamed up to raise $7,286,288.64 to help conquer childhood cancer, a nearly $200,000 increase over the previous year.
"Ever since I was a freshman in high school, I knew Mini-THON would be a huge part of my life. Mini-THON isn't just a school club, but it's also a way to participate in something much larger than yourself, knowing that you are making a positive impact in the lives of people affected by childhood cancer," stated Emma. "Nothing is more inspiring than seeing the ways your hard work and dedication have paid off to help families from all over."
Warwick High School has sponsored Mini-THON since 2011 when it began as a student project in a seminar class. This past spring, high school students raised more than $61,000 during their year-long effort finishing up with the 12-hour dance party in April.
