WHS Holds Ninth Grade Orientation


Warwick High School welcomed 320 incoming ninth graders today with a high energy, interactive Freshman Orientation program held throughout the school. More than 175 volunteer Link Crew Leaders, advisors and school administrators provided a fun, non-threatening environment to introduce the new students to high school.

Transitioning from the middle school to the high school can be intimidating and maybe even a little scary.  To ease that transition and make it a supportive and welcoming one, the high school administration invited incoming ninth graders to attend orientation with help from students and staff known as "Link Crew Leaders". 

On August 29 from 8 a.m. until noon, all incoming freshmen were invited to attend “Ninth Grade Orientation” to help them feel welcomed and connected.  The program, “Link Crew”, assigns incoming freshmen with “Link Leaders” as mentors during their first year at the high school.  These Link Leaders are responsible upperclassmen who were hand-selected last spring from a large pool of applicants and have met the qualifications of being good role models and positive leaders.  The students chosen to be Link Leaders represent a diverse cross section of the student body at Warwick and were determined largely by teacher recommendations in combination with three areas of assessment - attendance, grades, and discipline.

This is the fifth year for the Link Crew program.  Freshmen attended the orientation that began with an optional breakfast offered in the high school cafeteria from 7-8 a.m. prior to the formal welcome and activities. The official program began at 8 a.m. with an assembly in the gym and then moved into smaller classroom sessions led by their Link Leaders. Students received their tentative class schedule and had the opportunity to locate their classrooms.

Another positive aspect of the Link Crew program is its link with student safety.  When students feel connected and know where to go for support, they usually seek help faster. They also tend to approach their peers with issues they might not feel comfortable bringing to an adult. Getting issues to the forefront faster and knowing where to turn for answers can help make the school a safer environment for everyone.
