Beck Soles for Souls Collection

Beck Soles for Souls Collection

For a second year, sixth graders at John Beck Elementary School collected shoes for the organization, “Soles for Souls”. Last year they collected about 100 shoes. This year, the results were an even bigger success - Beck students collected and prepared 472 shoes for delivery. They packed them in boxes and put the number of shoes in each box on the outside.  The shoes will be sorted for distribution and used in supporting micro-businesses in developing nations.

The shoe collection was in response to reading a true story called, “A Long Walk to Water” - the story of a girl from southern Sudan, Nya, who spends all day, every day, collecting water for her family, and a boy, Salva, who is forced to flee his village when fighting breaks out.  Salva travels for more than 10 years from one refugee camp to another as one of the Lost Boys of Sudan.  This story highlighted many struggles of these children:  finding good drinking water, avoiding disease, finding food, violence, and clothing.  Early in the book, both characters describe walking barefoot over dry earth and thorns.  Because of this, the students and sixth grade teachers worked together to collect the shoes.
