Winter Weather Delays & Closings
Winter Weather Notifications
Now that Winter is officially upon us, Warwick School District would like to remind parents how we communicate and how decisions are made in the event schedule changes are necessary due to inclement weather.
In the event that the District needs to notify families of a two-hour delay or morning closure of school, Warwick does NOT send a phone alert out to families. We have found that the vast majority of families do not want to receive phone communication at an early hour, so phone alerts are used only to communicate emergency information and/or early dismissals announced during a school day.
Parents should check the Warwick website at www.warwicksd.org, Warwick's Facebook and Twitter pages, and the media outlets listed below for morning decision information. Typically, these decisions are made before 6 AM.
If you would like to receive notification directly to your email account in the morning from the district on these schedule changes and any other important information, an alternate method is to sign up for our subscription, push email alert system, Fast News. You can subscribe to Fast News by going to the WSD homepage: www.warwicksd.org, clicking on the FastNews button on the right side of the page and following the quick and easy instructions. Fast News will reach you almost immediately after the announcement by the district has been made.
The announcement of school delays or closings will also be posted to the district’s website and Facebook/Twitter pages, as well as reported on the following local radio and television stations:
• FUN FM 101.3
• WARM FM 103.3
• WDAC FM 94.5
• WJTL FM 90.3
• WITF FM 99.9
• WGAL 8
• ABC 27
• CBS 21
• FOX 43
• Blue Ridge Cable 11
During school hours, in the event of an early dismissal or other emergency, parents will be alerted by phone via Black Board Connect. An early dismissal or any other important information that needs to be conveyed and impacts students/families during the school day will be communicated in this way. As always, a Fast News notification will also be sent out, the information will be posted to Warwick's website and social media pages, and the news media will be alerted.
So how does the District decide whether to delay/close school?
According to Warwick Superintendent Dr. April Hershey, "In making decisions related to weather and our school schedule, student and staff safety is priority #1. The district utilizes information from a wide variety of sources in making these difficult decisions, including weather professionals, township and borough road crews, local emergency management, local law enforcement, neighboring school districts, and personal experiences with driving around the district to experience conditions firsthand. Timing in decision-making is critical; morning calls must be made by 5:30 a.m. to provide sufficient notice for bus contractors and building and grounds staff to ensure our facilities are ready for students and staff. In determining an early dismissal, a decision must be made by 10:30 a.m. for similar reasons, so buses can be ready to get students home safely, and our facilities are safe for buses to pick up our students. We also think specifically of our student drivers when making weather related decisions. We recommend that families have a ‘Plan B’ if you do not wish for your student driver to be on the road when school is in session. We thank you for your support and patience as weather is often difficult to predict."
