KH Discovers the Cause and Effect of Charged Balloons

Fourth graders at Kissel Hill Elementary School are learning about Magnets and Electricity in their physical science class. To begin the unit, Miss Alexandra Bartlett, the student teacher for Mrs. Albert, gave the students hands-on opportunities to explore cause and effect with charged balloons and their hair.

The cause of the charged balloon was discovered to be from the rub of a wool cloth leaving it negatively charged. The effect, when students placed the balloons near their hair, was discovered to be their positively charged hair sticking to the balloon because opposite charges attract.

Through the investigation the students discovered that like charges repel and opposite charges attract.

The fourth graders will continue to learn about electricity and how it is related to magnetism.
