Warwick School District

School Health Services

Nursing Department

School nursing, a specialized practice of nursing, protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success. School nurses, grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are the leaders who bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential (National Association of School Nursing, February 2017).

The goal of the Health Service Department is to prevent disease and maintain health of our students, which enables our student to focus on the education and be able to achieve their first choice.  Along with caring for student and faculty illnesses and emergencies, school nurses maintain health and immunization records on all students, perform state-mandated health screenings, administer doctor prescribed medications, perform nursing procedures, assist physicians and dentists with school examinations, provide health counseling and referrals, provide classroom instruction on health related topics, and serve as a parent and classroom consultant in health related matters.

School nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.

Warwick School District has six Certified School Nurses (CSN). We also have three Health Room Nurses that are Registered Nurses (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) who will care for students in the absence of the certified school nurse.

If you wish to speak to a member of the health services department concerning your child, please contact the school nurse or health room nurse in your child's building.

For questions about the district's health services department, contact Dr. Melanie Calender, Assistant Superintendent, 717-626-3734.

* Illnesses or accidents that happen outside the school day should be referred to your family doctor or treated at an emergency room.
